About Footnoted

Footnoted is an independent trivia publication: fact pages on history, geography, nature, the human body and everyday customs, each followed by a short quiz.

How the pages are written

• Every figure on a page comes from a named reference: encyclopaedias, government agencies, museum and university resources, peer-reviewed papers or the scholarly compilations they draw on. Those references are linked at the bottom of each page.
• When references disagree, the page says so. River lengths, empire areas and lake surfaces are estimates, and the method behind an estimate often matters as much as the number.
• Quiz questions are written for this site. Each answer is checked against the sources of the page it belongs to, and the explanation shown after you answer repeats the fact so the quiz teaches rather than just scores.
• Pages carry a publication date and, when revised, an update date.

The quizzes run entirely in your browser. Nothing is recorded, no account is needed and no score leaves your device. If JavaScript is switched off, the article above each quiz contains every answer.

About this domain

From roughly 2013 to 2016 this domain hosted a different trivia and facts website, first built on Joomla and later on WordPress. Several years later the address was used by unrelated gambling pages. Footnoted is a new publication with no connection to either of those sites or to the people who ran them. None of their texts, images or quizzes are reused here; the pages on this site were written from scratch, from the references they cite.
